Sheryl Dianne Rhodes was born July 23, 1961 in
Little Rock,
Arkansas. She graduated from Lee High School,
Montgomery,
Alabama in 1979. She attended Auburn University
and received
a BS and BSLD in Education in 1983. She earned
her Master’s
Degree in Elementary Education in 1986. She attended
Troy State
University in 1997 and Alabama State University
in 1999, earning
her Master’s Degree in Library & Media
Technology.
Sherry started her teaching career at Brewbaker
Elementary in
Montgomery, AL, where she taught 1st grade from
1983-84. She
then taught at Flowers Elementary in Montgomery
from 1984-1990, teaching Special Ed for two years
and 1st grade for four years.
She then taught first grade and was Library Media
Technologist at
Girard Elementary in Dothan, Alabama from 1990-2002.
Sherry dedicated her life to the loving care and
welfare of all
children. She unselfishly gave of herself and
her resources to
help people, especially children. It was not a
coincidence that she chose to be an educator by
profession, it was just another way for her to
help and care for the needs of children. No child
in her class went without proper clothing, glasses,
or Christmas or Birthday presents. She bought
clothes for those in need. She paid for
children to go on field trips. She spent thousands
of dollars to buy personal videos, books and resources
to share with classroom teachers. Not only did
she reach out to children at school, but she became
a foster mom the last six months of her life.
God called
her to heaven on January 31, 2002, just the month
after she had
the joy of spending Christmas with her three foster
children.
We wish to make foster care a legacy to her memory.
